The Cutty Sark, the ship that became the embodiment of Britain's great maritime past, needed £3.5million to meet the cost of its restoration after last year's fire. Last month, in this paper, Tristram Hunt, the historian, called on London philanthropists to rally round "a defining symbol of London and its commercial history". As a result of his exhortations, Lord Sterling has brokered a donation from the shipping magnate Sammy Ofer to provide the necessary funds; the Heritage Lottery Fund has already provided £23 million. Mr Ofer deserves the grateful thanks of all who cherish Britain's maritime history.
