Comment: save our trees

Some of London's trees are landmarks every bit as well-loved as the city's great buildings - such as the Dorchester plane, in front of the hotel. Yet as Trees for Cities points out, they do not have anything like the same protected status as old buildings. The charity is urging the Mayor to give historic trees "listed" status to make it harder for landowners or developers to cut them down. This is a sensible proposal. Mayor Johnson has committed himself to planting 10,000 street trees in London but he should also give our oldest trees the protection they deserve.
