Comment: Trust in teens

Prince Charles's charity, The Prince's Trust, has already provided modest grants for hundreds of community projects helping disadvantaged young people in London. now it has a new project, which begins this autumn, to help keep troubled teenagers from crime. Part of its task will be to present a more positive image of young people - negative publicity about inner-city teenagers can generate unfair prejudice. The greater part of the money will be spent on community projects, such as basketball coaching for boys, to provide positive alternatives to life on the streets.

There are several excellent initiatives being undertaken by charities working with disaffected youth but the Prince's Trust has a track record of reaching vulnerable groups. It is seeking £1 million a week from City firms and London businesses. Prince Charles deserves credit for encouraging his charity to take on this huge challenge - and support from companies and institutions which want to show they have an interest in promoting community cohesion.
