Commuters' fury at 10% rail fare rise

Commuters today launched a blistering attack on rail bosses after it emerged that fares are set to rise by as much as 10 per cent.

Passengers said the increases were unjustified, with the above-inflation rises coming on top of the rapidly escalating cost of groceries, energy bills and other household essentials.

The move means hundreds of pounds will be added to some annual tickets which could cost more than £4,000 when the new rates come into force in January. Passengers at Victoria station - serviced by Southeastern trains, where some the highest increases are expected - slammed the operator.

Unreliable services and already-high fares were cited as the major objections.

Craig Bulow, 33, from Nunhead, said: "The increase isn't justified. There are regular delays, you can never get a seat. The bus isn't a realistic alternative."

Southern network commuters face rises of up to six per cent. Mo El-Turki, 35, a retail director from Haywards Heath, said: "We're encouraged to use public transport for environmental reasons, but these price rises are a major deterrent." Jacqueline Abbots-Deane, a company director from Dulwich, criticised the " overcrowded, poorly maintained" trains.

Southeastern has been given government permission to raise fares more than other operators to pay for a new high-speed commuter service from Ashford into St Pancras International.
