Commuters set for massive hike in Tube and bus fares

Millions of Tube travellers will learn today how much they will have to fork out for fares in the new year.

London mayor Boris Johnson is announcing the January 2010 fare levels for the Underground as well as for London's buses, the Docklands Light Railway and Thames river services.

Passenger groups have expressed fears that fares could rise at a time when the retail price index (RPI) rate of inflation is in negative territory.

Mr Johnson will have to perform a delicate balancing act between the need to finance a huge Underground investment programme and the desire not to increase monetary hardship for the capital's public transport travellers.

Last year, Mr Johnson announced January 2009 Tube and London bus fare rises of 6%. Although the Mayor is not bound by the price formula which governs regulated fares on the national mainline railway, the 6% London rise was in line with the national average increase.

The national rise is based on July's RPI figure plus 1% which, this year, means that national mainline regulated fares - which include season tickets - will actually go down in January 2010.

"We certainly do not want to see fares rising above the level of inflation," said Jo deBank of transport passenger watchdog London TravelWatch.

She went on: "We are worried that fares will go up. We appreciate that times are hard for Transport for London but we don't think this is the time to start pricing people off public transport."
