Controversial new book teaches children how to make guns out of Lego

It is the classic toy that has kept children happily building castles and houses for decades.

But now Lego is set to turn slightly more sinister with the launch of an unofficial book that teaches children how to make weapons out of the iconic plastic bricks.

A Christmas bestseller, "Forbidden Lego: Build the models your parents warned you against" is a controversial new book that gives children detailed instructions on how to make weapons such as catapults and 'automatic ping-pong ball launchers' purely out of Lego.

The book's launch has seen a huge surge in Lego sales and videos of the homemade Lego weapons on video-sharing website YouTube have fired people's imagination about the more violent possibilities of the cult toy.

"Using Lego bricks in combination with common household materials (from rubber bands and glue to plastic spoons and ping-pong balls) along with some very unorthodox building techniques, you'll learn to create working models that LEGO would never endorse," says the book's publisher.

The book was written by two former Lego employees, Ulrik Pilegaard and Mike Dooley who wanted to chare all the ideas they had while with the company but which were slated as too dangerous to develop.

"When I worked for Lego, every once and a while we created some really cool things that couldn't get approved," Pilegaard told Danish newspaper, The Copenhagen Post.

"But that's fair enough, since Lego has rules stating that toys shouldn't be dangerous for kids."
