Conway told to pay back public money and say sorry

DISGRACED MP Derek Conway was today ordered to repay £3,700 he gave his son from public funds.

A year after a report found he gave a salary to his younger son Freddie for a non-job, a second report today found him guilty of overpaying his older son, Henry.

Parliament's anti-sleaze watchdog accused him of another "serious lapse of judgment".

It detailed payments, including a salary equivalent to more than £20,000 a year plus bonuses, to Henry who was a full-time student at the time. The committee said the salary was too high for the menial tasks described.

"We expect him (Conway senior) to apologise to the House for his breach of the rules by writing to our chairman," it said.

"We also recommend Mr Conway be required to reimburse the House for the full cost of the overpayment to Henry Conway, totalling £3,757.83." MPs will vote on whether to impose the punishments.

Party organiser Henry, now 26, carried out administrative and research duties for his father between July 2001 and September 2004.
