Council tax rises highest in Kingston

A London council was today accused of grabbing the biggest rise in council tax anywhere in the country.

Kingston-upon-Thames topped a league table of town halls imposing the biggest increases on residents, with a cumulative total of £5,776 since 1997.

Its Band D went up from £641 to £1,580, an increase of 147 per cent over the decade. That compared with a relatively tiny increase of £1,118 in Wandsworth, where the Band D bill went up from £423 to £687 - an increase of 62 per cent.

The average for London boroughs was a cumulative rise of £3,871, according to Conservative figures, compared with an average for England of £4,142.

Band D bills rose from £651 to £1,292 in the capital on average, up 98 per cent. The Conservatives dubbed the national figure a "£4,000 tax bombshell" for families but said the Kingston figure was "staggering".

In Scotland the equivalent figure was just £2,426.
