The accident happened at traffic lights on the A64 at Staxton just after 9am.

The coach was carrying members of a children's marching band - the Crystalettes from the West Midlands - who were on their way to an event at a holiday camp.

Police said that after hitting the car the coach crashed through a hedge and collided with a parked camper van in front of a house.

A spokesman said: 'Had the camper van not been there the bus could have gone into the house.

'The coach was carrying a group of young people as well as adults and they are very shocked.

'We are unable to release any further information regarding the identities of the man and woman who died as we are in the process of notifying next of kin.'

It is thought the couple were from South Yorkshire.

The A64, a busy route to the coast, was closed in both directions at Staxton at the junction with the B1249.
