Court win for woman gored by elephant

A mother-of-three who was gored by an elephant at a resort in Kenya has won a seven-year battle for compensation from a friend of the royal family.

Wealthy conservationist Ian Craig, whose daughter Jecca is one of Prince William's closest friends, runs the Il Ngwesi Lodge where Wendy Martin was staying when she was attacked by the three-ton animal.

The 46-year-old needed 16 operations after the elephant drove its tusks through her chest, abdomen, right thigh and calf. She also suffered a crushed pelvis after the animal knelt on her.

Today, the Kenyan High Court ruled that Mr Craig, Il Ngwesi and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy had been negligent and had failed to properly protect their guests. Mrs Martin, of Godalming, is now eligible to receive up to £800,000 compensation.

She said: "No amount of money will ever be able to compensate my family for the horrific experience we have been through."

Mrs Martin, her husband Steve, a senior diplomat at the British embassy in Nairobi, and their three children travelled to the resort in 2000 for a holiday with friends. She was 300 yards from the lodge when the elephant attacked.
