Crash cyclist was chef at top St James's club

A cyclist knocked down and killed by a double-decker bus in Park Lane was a chef at one of London's best-known gentlemen's clubs, it has emerged.

David Gaydier was cycling home after his evening shift as sous chef at the East India Club in St James's Square when he was hit by a number-74 bus and dragged under the wheels.

Emergency services tried to save the 35-year-old but he was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on Thursday night. Mr Gaydier, originally from France, lived in Shepherd's Bush and regularly cycled to work. His Canadian wife Alison was today being comforted by family and friends.

Colleagues of the 35-year-old were shocked to learn of the successful chef 's death. One said: "You have things like this in the Standard all the time, about people getting knocked down. It is so tragic to think it happened to one of our staff."

Detectives investigating Mr Gaydier's death were today set to interview the driver of the bus. They are also appealing for any witnesses to the accident to come forward.
