Crete mother faces year in jail before baby death trial

Leah Andrew collapsed and was taken to hospital after giving evidence for six hours in court yesterday. She had been told she would be held in jail for up to a year before her trial.
Her father, Isaac Andrew, had flown to Crete to be with his 20-year-old daughter for the hearing from the family home in Hither Green, south London.
He said he was sure his daughter had not killed the baby and was innocent. Mr Andrew also said he and his wife had known about the pregnancy for months, and that both his daughter and the baby's father had wanted the child. He said: "My daughter did not kill her child ... what they are accusing her of doing I don't think she did." Three days ago the 54-yearold council refuse collector said he had no idea she was having a baby.
Ms Andrew is charged with infanticide which carries a 20-year-sentence. The mother of two other sons, aged two and one, had gone to the tourist destination on holiday with friends and her sister Lydia, 24.
She is accused of smothering the child minutes after it was born in the early hours of Monday.
After Iraklion magistrates decided to jail her, Miss Andrew collapsed. She had broken down as she recalled giving birth alone at her hotel.
