Police appeal to student murder witnesses

These passers-by filmed on CCTV near a London railway station could hold vital clues to an unsolved murder.

Detectives released the grainy images today as they appealed for new information about the killing of university student Sam Guidera a year ago.

Mr Guidera, 24, was stabbed to death after leaving Penge East railway station on February 12 last year.

He died of a single stab wound to the heart and his wallet was stolen. Detectives today revealed that he was involved in a struggle at a bus stop and that witnesses have said they saw two men, both black, running away.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Haines said the images showed people close to the scene who are being treated purely as witnesses. Some, if not all, are believed to have got off a train from Victoria at 9.41pm.

Mr Haines said: "These people may have seen Sam or his attackers. We urge them to come forward." Mr Guidera's mother, Sarah, told the Standard: "We are desperate for people to come forward. Nothing is going to bring Sam back but we might get some closure if we can see someone go on trial."

Mr Guidera was carrying a pink T-Mobile bag and his killers may have thought he had just bought a phone.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8345 3734 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
