Cruise finishes before it begins

Two thousand cruise passengers had their £1,500 Mediterranean tour cancelled before it began yesterday.

The Sea Princess should have left Southampton for a two-week cruise including a stop-off at Barcelona. Some trippers had already spent a night on board.

But a propulsion motor, which had failed on the ship's previous cruise, defied the efforts of a techincal team to fix it.

Eventually a Princess Cruises spokesman said the tour was cancelled as "safety is our number one priority".

"All passengers will receive a full refund and a 25 per cent future cruise credit," he added.

Civil Servant Ken Watson, 62, had paid £3,000 for the cruise and arrived with wife Wendy on Saturday afternoon.

"We were supposed to set sail that night but that obviously didn't happen," he said.

Mr Watson, from Brentwood, Essex, added: "We woke up the next morning to find a letter in our cabin telling us the trip had been cancelled."

A year ago the Sea Princess had to be disinfected after 200 passengers were struck down by a virus.
