Cyclists' racetrack delayed by newts
26 September 2007
The new 2km on and off-road track at Hog Hill in Hainault is expected to open next year as a replacement for the Eastway cycle circuit in Stratford, which is being bulldozed to make way for the Olympic velodrome.
The London Development Agency says the protection of the newts shows the extent to which it is going to ensure the Games are as well planned as possible.
More than 100 of the amphibians, which are protected by law, have been trapped by wildlife experts.
They will be moved to a pond area in the centre of the new track, which will be in use until 2012 when public racing returns to Stratford after the Games.
The agency had to wait until the newt breeding season to survey the size of the population at Hog Hill.
Ecologist Pete Lawrence said: "The new circuit will be a safe spot, providing habitat for them to forage."
