Dan's the man again for Spurs

Tottenham have renewed their efforts to sign Espanyol defender Daniel Jarque after Alan Hutton turned them down for a second time in a week.

Spurs have made another enquiry for the 25-year-old, who has told the Spanish club he wants to go to White Hart Lane.

Head coach Juande Ramos is a big fan of the defender, having promoted him from the youth set-up to the first team when he was in charge of Espanyol six years ago.

But Espanyol are still insisting they won't sell for any less than the release clause of 12m euros (£9million) in his contract.

Tottenham are desperate to avoid further disappointment in the transfer market after Hutton rejected them twice in six days and they won't try again.

The Rangers right-back wants to stay at Ibrox for the rest of the season but wants a move to Manchester United in the summer. Jarque is supposedly out for two weeks with a foot injury, but there are suspicions that his absence has more to do with Ramos's interest.

Tottenham have also had their hopes of signing Urby Emanuelson ruined by former midfielder Edgar Davids after he told the Ajax left-back that he should join a bigger club.

Ajax had already rejected a bid of around £5.5m for the 21-year-old, but Tottenham were confident they could get their man for £7m. However, Davids, who played at White Hart Lane for two years before rejoining Ajax 12 months ago, has advised his team-mate to wait for better offers elsewhere.

Emaneulson said: "I've talked about Spurs with Davids, of course, because he's played there. Edgar said they're a beautiful club, but that I shouldn't limit myself to just them. He said: 'You are an Ajax player, you are young and talented, so you should be aiming to go to a top club from England, Spain or Italy'."
