Data watchdog: don't ban sports day photographs

Parents should not be banned from taking photographs of their children at school sports day because of data protection laws, a watchdog ruled today.

The Information Commissioner's Office said relatives could also take pictures of school plays without breaching data legislation.

The ruling came after some headteachers stopped parents from using their cameras at school events. Deputy Commissioner David Smith said it was a "myth" that the Data Protection Act outlawed such snaps destined for the family album.

However, schools could still stop pictures being taken on child protection grounds.

New guidance for town halls, schools, colleges and universities clarifies how the Act applies and urges a "commonsense approach".
