Billy Fellows died after a street gang attack in Wallsend
He was walking home to Cheadle Avenue from the Archer Street Club, which he had been running after the recent death of his father.
Mr Fellows's daughter Sarah said: "The people who have done this have no idea how they have torn my world apart. I will keep his spirit with me throughout life and try to make a difference for him.
"Words cannot express how truly devastated I am to lose my sole protector in life. I need a hug from him right now. I need him to tell me that everything is OK.
"My dad loved to enjoy life and he truly appreciated the beauty of the world and human nature around him.
"He would always comfort me in times of trouble, reassuring me that nothing in life was that bad.
"Unfortunately, it was his optimistic outlook that led to the loss of my best friend in the entire world.
"He would always stand up to any kind of injustice."
Jeffrey Gosling, 18, of Hazelwood Terrace, Wallsend, was initially charged with assault, but has been re-arrested and charged with manslaughter.
He has been remanded him in custody to appear at Newcastle Crown Court.
