Denmark and Germany agree to £4bn bridge which will link the two countries together

A bridge linking Germany to Denmark will finally be built after 15 years of squabbling over costs.

The 12-mile link is expected to cost £4billion and when completed in a decade’s time will connect the German Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn with the Danish island of Lolland.

Transport ministers from the two countries are to meet in Copenhagen next Wednesday to sign the treaty allowing construction of the bridge.

It will significantly cut rail journey and driving times between Hamburg and Copenhagen.

The bridge will also make trade between Scandinavia and the European mainland much easier.

Most of the money for the project will come from the Danes, because it is thought they will benefit more than Germany.

However, some Germans living near the site fear it will hit the ferry industry, while environmentalists are worried about the effect on the area’s ecology.
