Did teenage gang murder retired policeman outside his home?

A retired policeman who died after being found unconscious in the street could have been remonstrating with teenagers.

Adrian Daniels, a former detective constable at Scotland Yard, had suffered head injuries. Police are treating his death as suspicious and are investigating whether he was attacked.

The 50-year-old father of two was found only yards from his front door in Burghfield Common, Berkshire, on 19 July and died in hospital 24 hours later.

During his career, Mr Daniels was involved in policing the 1975 Balcombe Street siege and investigated the IRA bombing of a Wimpy bar in 1981, which killed his friend Ken Howarth, a bomb disposal expert. He is believed to have retired in 2005.

Neighbour Kevin Upton, 62, said today: "He was a nice guy who looked out for us all. As a retired policeman he never really went off duty. Occasionally we get kids out behind this street smoking dope, but Mr Daniels would go out and get them to stop."

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Daniels died from his head injuries, and further tests will be carried out. Officers are also investigating if he might have fallen over.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Dowling said: "I am keeping an open mind about the circumstances of Mr Daniels's death, but I am treating it as suspicious due to the initial findings of the post-mortem."
