Diner sues restaurant after getting a 9-FOOT tapeworm after eating undercooked fish

A diner who claims he contracted a 9-foot tapeworm after eating undercooked fish is suing the restaurant where he had the meal.

Anthony Franz says he fell violently ill after ordering a salmon salad from a Chicago seafood restaurant two years ago.

A pathologist later determined the giant parasite he passed probably came from salmon which had not been properly cooked.

Now Franz wants $100,000 compensation from Shaw's Crab House.

But the company that owns Shaw's, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises,  insists there is no proof the meal Franz consumed two years ago was the source of the tapeworm.

Spokesman Carrol Symank demanded proof that the infestation wasn't caused by another restaurant or fish Mr Franz had cooked himself.

He said: 'We have done a thorough investigation and we're confident the restaurant is not the cause.'

Adult tapeworm infection is the infection of the digestive tract by parasitic flatworms called cestodes or Woods.

Live tapeworm larvae are sometimes ingested by consuming undercooked food. Once inside the digestive tract, the larva grows into an adult tapeworm, which can live for years and grow very large.

Additionally, many tapeworm larvae cause symptoms in an intermediate host. For example, cysticercosis is a disease of humans involving larval tapeworms in the human body.
