Gift: Christie's handout of Princess Diana's gold necklace, given as a gift to medium Rita Rogers

The necklace belongs to Rita Rogers who met the princess in 1994 and, as a medium, did card readings for her right up to her death.

Diana gave Mrs Rogers the 15-carat piece after visiting her with her lover, Dodi Fayed. It is made of linked hearts.

The accompanying letter reads: 'Dearest Rita, This necklace was made for you and comes with so much love to a very special lady with an extraordinary gift. From x Diana x.'

Mrs Rogers is to split the proceeds of the sale between her daughters and has vowed to make a donation to a hospice.

The necklace will be auctioned at Christie's in South Kensington a week today.
