Christmas comes early: The Prince and Duchess's official festive portrait was taken in June

Apart from a seasonal greeting inside, the couple's 2007 official card appears to have no connection with Christmas.

But, as our mock-up below shows, with just a couple of simple Santa hats and some time on their home PC, the Prince and Duchess could easily have got into the festive spirit.

A Clarence House spokesman said: "The Prince and the Duchess have never gone in for cards with robins or Christmas trees.

"Their cards have traditionally been portraits of them or their children at family occasions.

"Nothing has changed."
