Docs call for zero drink-drive limit

New legislation should outlaw driving after drinking any alcohol at all, doctors said today.

The Government should set the alcohol limit for drivers at zero in order to remove any ambiguity, the British Medical Association conference in Torquay heard today.

BMA public health committee chairman Chris Spencer-Jones said: "It takes away the freedom of it being socially acceptable to drink and drive.

"The only way of sending out a really strong message is through legislation. We are behind other countries on this.

"There are about 3,000 deaths a year on the roads and over a third of these involve alcohol, police say."

In a range of motions aimed at tackling the "worrying" rise in alcohol-related death and illness, doctors called for much stricter controls on alcohol sales.

The age for buying drink in off-licences, supermarkets and other shops should be raised to 21, they said.

And the current 18 age limit for buying drink should be restricted to pubs and licensed hotels.
