Dog shot after mauling four in street rampage

A pitbull-type dog was shot dead by armed police today after running wild and attacking four people including a toddler.

The dog escaped from a house in Mitcham at about 11.20am and bit the child in the leg in South Lodge Avenue.

Minutes later a bus driver was attacked, and as the two victims were being taken to hospital the dog struck again, attacking a woman of 50 and leaving a fourth person with facial injuries. Police searched the area and shot the dog at 1.30pm.

A police source said: "The dog appears to have escaped through a hole in the fence and gone wild."

A 29-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control.
