Down...but Murray is definitely not out

Britain's Andy Murray battled his way into the last 16 at Wimbledon yesterday with a thrilling victory over the former world No2, German Tommy Haas.

The impressive performance on Centre Court by Britain's only singles survivor was watched by a string of celebrities, including Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton, Sir Terry Wogan, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Steve Redgrave and Jennifer Saunders.

And Britain's former Wimbledon favourite Tim Henman cheered him on from the Royal Box, alongside tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.

Murray's mother Judy and girlfriend Kim Sears were also there, frequently standing up to urge him on.

The 21-year-old Scot survived an awkward tumble on to the grass and a scare in the second set, which he lost on a tie-break, but raised his game, eventually winning in four sets: 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Murray, the No12 seed, said: 'I thought it was a good match.

'I've only dropped the one set, but I'll have to play better if I want to go further.'

He now faces Richard Gasquet, the No8 seed from France who reached the semi-final last year.
