Driver flees the scene after his £84,000 BMW kills couple

A driver ran off leaving a man and a woman dead on the pavement after hitting them in his top-of-the-range £84,000 BMW yesterday.
The victims – a man aged 47 and a woman aged 21 – were walking home after a night out when they were struck by the car, which also hit a parked Mercedes.
Witnesses saw the driver get out of his 155mph black BMW M6, look at the couple lying on the pavement and then run away from the scene, in Perivale, West London.
Cynthia Goddard, whose front wall collapsed after the car – with a personalised number plate – smashed into it, described how she was woken at 1.30am by a noise which sounded like ‘a bomb going off’.

She said: ‘It made me jump, and I ran over to my bedroom window to have a look.
‘I saw the driver, he was standing on the passenger side of the car.
‘He looked shocked and then looked at me.
‘As soon as he made eye contact with me he ran away so fast.
‘I decided to go outside to investigate because from my window I couldn’t see anything else but the car.
‘When I walked around the other side of the car I saw the two bodies lying there.
‘They both looked as if they were dead. I just kept looking at the young girl – her eyes were closed and she was very pale. I still can’t get that image out of my head.
‘The man was lying close to her and he also looked dead.
‘I think I was in so much shock that I stood there and didn’t know what to do. By this time the paramedics and a nurse had arrived and I could hear the nurse saying, “she’s not breathing, she’s not breathing”.
‘They were desperately trying to resuscitate them but it was no use, I could see they were dead.
‘I just cannot believe how the driver could have just run off.
‘He must have seen those bodies, how could he have not?
‘I wish I’d never witnessed it. I just cannot get the image of the two lying there on the footpath out of my head.’
Police said last night they were trying to trace the victims’ families and a post-mortem examination would be held.
It was unclear whether the couple were connected.
Officers also took away the BMW and Mercedes for forensic analysis.
Last night Scotland Yard said a 23-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was being held in custody at a West London police station.
He was also breath-tested but police refused to discuss the results.
A spokesman added that the Mercedes was empty at the time of the crash. ‘We urge anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch with us.’
