Dyson with more revs than F1 racer

Sir James Dyson, the entrepreneur behind the bagless vacuum, today unveiled a hand-held cleaner with a motor that spins faster than a Formula 1 car.

Sir James, who says he aims to develop technology using as few raw materials as possible, claims his latest invention is ideal for sucking up spilt cereal.

He has made a similar cleaner with a motorised brush to get rid of pet hairs.

The 62-year-old designer, whose inventions have earned him £800million, said: "Not that many people own a hand-held vacuum at the moment because they don't suck very well. But the DC31 is different and has very strong suction. It has a motor that goes at 106,000rpm - three times faster than any other motor.

"It is ideal for cleaning inside cars, muddy footprints, on stairs or picking up spilt cereal." Sir James said he was not in the business of lecturing people about how to reduce their carbon footprint.

"I'm in the business of developing technology that uses fewer raw materials. The challenge is for us to produce more performance from using less energy."

Sir James has unveiled designs for an all-in-one toaster, juicer and blender. His first major invention was the Ballbarrow wheelbarrow in the Seventies.

The DC31, priced at £129.99 will be available from all Dyson retailers next month. The DC31 Animal for pet hairs costs £149.99.
