Early breast cancer detection gives 60% of women normal life

Women with breast cancer who are diagnosed early, live for as long as women who never develop the disease, new research has found.

The study, by the Association of Breast Surgery and the NHS Breast Screening Programme, found that the 60 per cent of sufferers diagnosed before their cancers spread to the lymph nodes had the same life expectancy as healthy women.

It also revealed that survival rates among those with more aggressive types of cancer were improving.

Professor Julietta Patrick, director of the NHS Breast Screening Programme, said the news highlighted the importance of regular check-ups.

"Huge strides have been made over the past two decades and more women than ever before are surviving breast cancer, many of whom have benefited from early detection through routine breast screening," she said.

Martin Lee, president of the Association of Breast Surgery said: "It is vital that women are aware of the excellent survival rates now achieved for breast cancers diagnosed through screening.

"I would encourage all women who are invited to be screened to attend."
