East End pubs make way for Olympics

Traditional East End pubs are disappearing as property developers around the Olympic Park tempt owners to sell up.

Nine out of 39 pubs in E3, around Bow, have been sold in the past 18 months to make way for flats.

The London Development Agency said none was subject to a compulsory purchase order.

A drop in trade around the 2012 site, where many businesses and roads have closed to make way for new infrastructure, may have encouraged publicans to move on.

The Lighthouse in Wick Lane, near the now virtually unused Pudding Mill Lane station, has lost almost 70 per cent of trade this year.

Tower Hamlets council has a policy of trying to protect viable pubs. If there is not another one within easy walking distance, it may resist development.

A council spokesman said: "The number of London pubs has steadily declined over the past few years. There are lots of possible reasons for this, including changing drinking habits as more people drink at home, and the demand for housing. Ultimately, however, it is the pub owner's choice to sell or vacate their property."
