Ecstatic fans who drank while their local hero drove to victory

DRINKERS at Lewis Hamilton's village pub toasted his success, after cheering him to victory.

The Rose and Crown, in Tewin, Hertfordshire, erupted in the last half mile of the season's final race in Brazil, as Hamilton snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. As he crossed the line, fans and neighbours praised the 23-year-old.

Beaming landlady Tats Higgins said: "It was tense, but it was a really big performance and everyone supported him well." College lecturer Jude O'Sullivan, 57, said: "He has achieved everything that the people who run the sport did not want. He is fabulous."

John Ansell, 60, a caretaker, summed up the emotion of a season finale. He said: "It was unbelievable, exciting it had everything."

Another fellow racing fan Don Newman, 60, who used to live around the corner from the Hamilton family, said: "We are all proud of him. It was pretty impressive stuff. In fact, it was superb." Farmer Andrew Sadler, 45, said: "It was everything that he deserved. He's a fantastic ambassador for the sport and his win is a great morale boost for our village and the whole of Britain.

"It's just what we all needed in such troubled times."
