Emburey pleads for Strauss
17 October 2007
That is the view of John Emburey, the Middlesex head of cricket, who remains convinced Strauss should be included in Friday's squad and also re-installed as vice-captain.
The former Test off-spinner and one time assistant England coach said: "Everything that Straussy does he is successful at. Given the opportunity, and given the backing, he will come back strongly.
"He will have had a rest from international cricket for three months by the time the tour starts, and a rest from all cricket for six or seven weeks. I'm sure that will have done him good and he will be bursting to get back into it."
Strauss enjoyed a fairytale start to Test cricket, beginning with a century against New Zealand on his home ground of Lord's in 2004 and then rattling off a total of 10 hundreds in his first 30 matches. Success on that scale could not continue indefinitely, but the 30-year-old's fall has been surprisingly heavy.
Since August 2006, the left-hander has passed 50 only five times to put his place in jeopardy for the three-Test tour of Sri Lanka.
But Emburey said: "He scored a 96 and another half-century against India, and he is one of those players who will suddenly fire. "His tactical awareness and his experience are also important factors and I think England need that at the top of the order. I will be disappointed if they don't pick him."
