Mike Tindall arriving at court today: He pleaded guilty to driving over the legal alcohol limit

England rugby player Mike Tindall pleaded guilty today to drink-driving.

The 29-year-old Gloucester centre was pulled over by police on the M4 near Reading, Berkshire, on March 15, the morning after a day at the races in Cheltenham with long-term partner Zara Phillips.

Tindall, of Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court to admit being over the legal alcohol limit.

He was bailed to appear before magistrates in Newbury, West Berkshire, on October 24, for a "special reasons" hearing.

His lawyer, Richard Mallett, said a medical expert would be called on that occasion to present the special circumstances of the case.

At the time of his offence, which took place on the eastbound M4 between Newbury and Reading, Tindall was off with a bruised liver, an injury suffered while playing against Wales.

Tindall was driving to Twickenham on May 15 following a day at the Cheltenham Festival, reportedly to commentate on England's Six Nations game against Ireland.

Officers pulled over his Range Rover Sport and he failed a breath test. He was subsequently arrested and charged. He had been driving alone.

Tindall spoke in court today only to confirm his name and date of birth before leaving without making a comment.
