Last night EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels were expected to extend the current travel ban to include more of those associated with the Mugabe regime.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Monday’s meeting between Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was only ‘a first step’.

EU nations wanted more proof that Mugabe was willing to sign up to a transitional government, he said.

The EU has already imposed travel and financial sanctions on 131 individuals connected to Mugabe’s regime.

Finnish foreign minister Alexander Stubb said it was too early for the EU to consider lifting the punitive measures put in place against Mugabe in 2002 in protest at human rights violations.
