Everyone can swim for free

Free swimming at public pools for millions of people is to be introduced under plans announced by Gordon Brown today.

The Prime Minister said a £130 million fund would give free admission to the over-Sixties under a scheme that will eventually include under-16s and, later, all other age groups.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said all pool entry charges should be scrapped by the time the London Olympics open in 2012. He likened the plan to Labour's decision to introduce free admission to museums and galleries in 1997.

Next year £80 million will be earmarked for town halls to waive charges for the over-Sixties, with a further £50 million available for pool upkeep.

Mr Burnham said: "This is a real Labour policy - getting people to take part in sport, which is good for them and good for the country."

Mr Brown, who is hosting a sports summit, will also publish the Government's legacy plan for the Games, setting out how it will use the Olympics to promote sport, regenerate east London and boost business, tourism and jobs.
