Evidence of more remains at Jersey care home as sniffer dog gives 'indication' in second cellar

There were fresh fears today that more children's remains could be found at the Jersey care home at the centre of abuse allegations after a sniffer dog gave an 'indication' of a find as police broke into a second hidden cellar.

The dog, which is trained to search for blood and human remains, was sent into a second underground room late yesterday afternoon at Haut de la Garenne, which is at the centre of an abuse inquiry.

Eddie, a specialist sniffer dog searching the cellar gave police a second positive "indication" , a spokesman said.

POlice hope to be able to carry out detailed forensic analysis of the room during the course of the day.

A spokeswoman for Jersey police warned against drawing premature conclusions.

She said: "The dog has given an indication but it's very close to the scene of the find in the first cellar."

The spokeswoman added: "As you know, late this afternoon the team working at Haut de la Garenne accessed the second cellar.

"A member of the forensic team has undertaken a preliminary investigation of the cellar and one of the specialist dogs has been sent down.

"It is hoped that full access to the second cellar will be gained tomorrow when the forensic work can begin in earnest."

The reaction from Eddie, the specialist sniffer dog, raises the prospect of further grisly finds at the home. Police entered the second room today after gaining access from above.

The room is three times the size of the first, where police found blood specks in a shallow concrete bath last week.

They also discovered an item, believed to be shackles, in the room, and a secret trapdoor entrance.

On a wooden beam near the bath were scrawled the words: "I've been bad for years and years."

Elsewhere on the site, police have found a child's skull and other bone fragments that may be human.

Residents of the home have told police horrific tales of abuse carried out underground in "punishment rooms".

Adults who, as children, lived in the home during the 1960s, 70s and 80s have claimed they were chained up, physically abused and raped in cellars at the home.
