Space Age: Exploration, Design and Popular Culture opens at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green on Saturday. Visitors will be invited to contemplate how space has become part of our lives through popular culture, literature, film, design and merchandising.

The interactive exhibition will explore how human fascination with space has developed, from the emergence of astronomy in about 2000 BC to Nasa's ambition to put humans on Mars.

Alongside historical space race artefacts will be objects ranging from space fantasy toys to examples of space-inspired fashion, film and interior design.

Curator Esther Lutman said: "It's fairly light-hearted but there is something for everybody."

The exhibition runs until 6 April.
