'Truly loved': Thomas Baker died after being hit by a train
In an emotional tribute issued by police, his mother, who did not want to be named, said: "Tommy boy was the apple of my eye. I still cannot believe what has happened.
"He was truly loved by all his family and friends and life will never be the same. Our hearts are broken.
"We would like to thank everyone for their support and love at this tragic time."
Thomas, from Halstead, was on the tracks with another boy, also 16, who managed to get out of the way in time.
The second boy was taken to the Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford suffering minor burn injuries.
They were among a group of youths who had been waiting for the train at the station.
Detective Inspector Bob Richardson of the British Transport Police said: "How the two came to be on the tracks is still being investigated and police have a number of people to interview.
"There is no evidence to suggest that the youths involved in this incident were playing chicken or trespassing on the tracks."
He said the incident was being treated as unexplained.
