The FBI has begun an investigation into the disappearance and possible murder of London-based media tycoon Leonid Rozhetskin.

An agent attached to the US diplomatic mission in the Latvian capital Riga is now involved in the hunt, according to a local police source.

And it has been suggested the FBI might also launch its own murder inquiry if it decides Latvian authorities are out of their depth.

Russian-born Rozhetskin, 41, became an American citizen after emigrating in the Eighties. The tycoon – a co-founder of London business newspaper

City AM and an outspoken critic of Russian president Vladimir Putin – vanished from his holiday home in Latvia on March 16.

The FBI is examining a theory from Rozhetskin's mother Elvira that he was killed on orders from Moscow over an alleged business dispute with a senior figure in Putin's administration.

Another theory is that he knew details of fortunes held by top Russian officials and was threatening to make them public.
