Fears of measles epidemic rise

A measles epidemic could hit London any day, experts warned today.

The number of cases in the capital has reached an 11-year-high, with 662 victims last year. It means an epidemic could break out imminently and infect tens of thousands of people, killing at least 12.

Dr Brian McCloskey, the Health Protection Agency's London director, said: "People are still not getting the message about the MMR jab and as a consequence we are at risk of an epidemic. We are very afraid it will happen soon."

Currently only 71.5 per cent of children in the capital have been immunised, compared to a national average of 84 per cent. Dr McCloskey said people were still worried about the MMR vaccine because of faulty research linking it to autism, which has been disproved.
