What if my flight is delayed?
Airlines are obliged to supply meals and refreshments along with accommodation if an overnight stay is required - but qualifying depends on the length of flight and delay. Flights of 1,500km or less where there is a delay of more than two hours mean passengers have to be given meals, refreshments plus telephone calls. If the delay is five hours or more passengers are entitled to refund their ticket with a free flight back to the point of departure, if required.
What if my flight is cancelled?
If the airline is to blame it must pay compensation. A refund should be offered along with a free flight back to the point of departure if necessary or alternative transport to the final destination. Airlines do not have to pay compensation if the reason for delays is due to "extraordinary circumstances". Compensation must be paid within seven days.
Are only scheduled flights covered by the compensation scheme?
It doesn't matter if the flight is with a budget airline, on a charter or on a scheduled service. Flights originating from inside the EU which are sold as part of a package tour are also covered.
What happens if my flight is overbooked?
Compensation must be paid immediately. Passengers must also be offered the choice of a refund, a flight back to the original point of departure or an alternative flight to continue the journey. If an aeroplane has been overbooked passengers who have already been allocated seats can choose if they want to volunteer their seats in return for cash negotiated with the airline.
| Compensation: Overbooking and cancellations | ||
| Length of journey | Delay | Compensation |
| Up to 1,500km | More than two hours | £173.04 |
| 1,500km - 3,500km | Up to three hours | £138.40 |
| 1,500km to 3,500km | More than three hours | £276.83 |
| More than 3,500km | More than four hours | £415.26 |
Do these rules apply only to EU residents?
No, although the regulations have been created by the EU you do not have to live within its borders to benefit. Passengers travelling on all domestic flights taking off from any airport in the EU are covered by the regulations. If you are travelling from an EU airport all airlines, whether European or not, are subject to the rules. People flying into the EU from overseas are also covered by the rules, as long as they are travelling on a European airline.
