Flights hit a record 2.5m this month

Climate scientists have sounded an alert as the number of flights worldwide this month was scheduled to hit a record 2.51 million.

The figure is up five per cent on the same time last year.

The rise is being blamed on the growth of low-cost airlines and a surge in domestic flights in China.

Scientists blame air travel for some of the greenhouse gas emissions that lead to global warming.

Kevin Anderson, from Manchester University's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, said: "While this might be good news for the aviation industry, it's bad news for the climate and ultimately it's our children who will be paying the price."
