Flood warning as UK is battered by heavy rain

Weather forecasters predicted flooding in parts of England today as storm clouds gathered.

The warning comes after many parts of England and Wales were hit by heavy showers over the weekend. Thousands of youngsters were sent home from the Ten Tors Challenge across Dartmoor on Saturday night amid fears surrounding swollen rivers.

Today Tony Conlan, of MeteoGroup UK, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: "There was a band of heavy and persistent rain that moved across England and Wales yesterday.

"The heaviest rain fell in south west England, Wales and the West Midlands.

"There is the potential for some heavy and thundery showers over East Anglia and the South East today but by the afternoon it could become dry.

"There is the possibility of flooding in localised areas."

The Environment Agency said there were 12 flood watches in place in England and Wales today.

The worst hit area was the Midlands, where experts were monitoring water levels in eight rivers, including the Sow, Stour and Penk. The other four flood watches were in Wales.
