Former Marine diver drowned while fishing

Dr David Bennetts, 63, had only been in the Chilliwack River in Fraser Valley, British Columbia, for minutes when he slipped and his waders filled with water in the strong current. The former Royal Marine reservist had been a diver in the Special Boat Service but he could not save himself.
He was finally stopped by a log jam but drowned before help could arrive. Mr Bennetts, from Church Crookham, Hampshire, was on a three-week holiday with his wife Pauline, travelling in a camper van.
Mrs Bennetts told the inquest that a Canadian Mountie had told her someone had been swept away. She said: "I could not believe it was David. He was very fit. He was a diver and a swimmer. I just didn't believe it. I was having none of it."
North Hampshire coroner Andrew Bradley recorded a verdict of accidental death.
