France to ban Muslim full-face veils on buses

Muslim women in France will be banned from wearing full-face veils on public transport and in schools, universities, post offices and hospitals under plans outlined today.

A parliamentary committee called for women wearing the "niqab" to be refused access to key public services.

It also recommended denying French citizenship to anyone showing visible signs of "radical religious practice". The proposals could come into force by the end of the year.

The niqab, which is worn with a long robe, is viewed by many as an affront to France's secular values and a gateway to extremism.

In 2004 Muslim headscarves were banned from French primary and secondary schools.

The latest plan would force women to show their faces when entering public institutions or boarding transport and to "keep the face uncovered throughout their presence".

Failure to do so would result "in a refusal to deliver the service demanded".

There are about five million Muslims living in France.
