Frank Lampard grieves for the mother who lost her battle against pneumonia at 58

Chelsea star Frank Lampard was grieving today after his mother lost her battle with pneumonia, yesterday.

The midfielder dashed to Pat Lampard's side last night when the 58-year-old, who has been suffering from severe pneumonia, took a turn for the worse.

She was admitted to a London hospital 10 days ago, and Frank missed Premier League games home and away to be at her bedside.

Her symptoms improved over the weekend and Frank made himself available for the Champions League game on Tuesday.

After Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield, Frank dashed back to London to be at her side again.

He will now miss this weekend's title decider against Manchester United.

Last night her health suddenly deteriorated and Frank was excused from club training on compassionate leave so he could be with her.

It has been an unsettled season at Stamford Bridge for the 29-year-old England star, with rumours he wants to join former boss Jose Mourinho at whatever new club he manages next, reported to be Inter Milan.

And with the additional worry about his mother, there have been suggestions that he has been struggling to focus on his game.

Frank, who once described himself as a "mummy's boy", will possibly be excluded from the squad for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.

But he admitted that his mum would not have wanted him to miss such an important game on her behalf.

He said: "Knowing her, she would've had a right go at me for not playing this game."
