Free school will specialise in science with King’s College aid

A NEW free school with links to King's College could be set up in London.

The school would work in "close collaboration" with the university and academics would advise and coach sixth formers on how to obtain places on degree courses.

It would be set up in Beckenham by the Harris Federation and specialise in science. Details emerged after a row over education in Bromley.

The federation, which runs nine academies in London, wanted to take over a sports college in the area and turn it into an academy. The local authority did not back the plan and wanted to be a "co-sponsor".

The federation decided to open a free school in the area instead, which would be outside local authority control.

A spokesman for the Harris Federation said of the plans: "King's was recently rated as one of the top 25 universities in the world and is the Sunday Times' university of the year in 2010-11. King's has outstanding science provision and is the largest medical school in Europe."

The move comes as parents in Brent announced they also want to open their own school.

Seven groups in London are expected to open free schools in September next year.

They will be able to set their own curriculum and pay scale for teachers.

Joan McFarlene, who is leading parents in Brent who want to establish their own school, said: "Our children in the community have been under-achieving for 50 years and it's about time we parents took control of their future. We want the best for them."

The group has held initial talks about the new school but no firm plans have been announced.
