Fury at 'ban' on eBay tickets for Wimbledon and the Ashes

Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon. Tournament ticket sales on eBay could be banned
The re-sale on the internet of tickets for Wimbledon or the Ashes could be banned under new Government proposals to be unveiled tomorrow.
Culture Secretary Andy Burnham is expected to announce a major consultation on moves to stop ticket touts cashing in on so-called "Crown Jewel" sporting events.
There is already a legal ban on the re-sale of football tickets to prevent fans breaching anti-hooligan arrangements – and selling on tickets for the 2012 Olympics will also be an offence.
The Government now wants to extend the ban to other events.
But officials also want to avoid "criminalising" ordinary fans trying to recoup the money for unwanted tickets. Last year the Commons Culture Committee warned of the dangers of regulation. Internet auction giant eBay last night reacted angrily to the move.
A spokeswoman said: "We're not at all convinced it would be in the interests of consumers, who appreciate the right to sell what's theirs.
"Up to a third of tickets for major sporting events are allocated to VIPs and corporate bigwigs, so often the only way genuine fans can get hold of a ticket is through eBay."
