Gales to blow away hopes of sunny and dry autumn

Heavy rain and gale force winds are expected to batter parts of Britain on Friday, dashing hopes of an Indian summer.

There now seems little hope of respite from the unusually wet weather as it is expected to continue into next week with forecasters issuing a severe weather warning.

The gloomy outlook comes as the Met Office chief executive John Hurst apologised for previously suggesting that "awful August" was going to "end on a high".

Mr Hurst blamed the inaccuracy on unusual atmospheric conditions, which have made it harder to produce reliable forecasts this summer.

Predictions now indicate that this month will follow the pattern of record rainfall seen last month.

A Met Office forecaster said: "The outlook is very unsettled. A deep area of low pressure will move in from the Atlantic and we could see non-stop rain all day on Friday, coupled with strong winds and low temperatures.

"The showers are likely to persist over the weekend and gradually ease towards the end of next week."

London and the South-East is expected to escape the worst of the weather with the South-West and parts of Wales facing up to two inches of rainfall on Friday as well as gale force winds.

Last month was the greyest August in Britain since records began in 1914 and one of the wettest ever.
