Gladstone's Old Masters headed to auction

A pair of oil paintings once owned by Sir William Gladstone will go under the hammer at a sale of more than 500 Old Masters.

The paintings, The Denial Of Saint Peter and Christ And The Adultress, are attributed to a 17th century Neapolitan artist known as the Pseudo-Codazzi, although some experts believe they are by Antonio de Michele. They were almost certainly acquired by Gladstone in 1850 and 1861, before he became prime minister. He hung the paintings, measuring 30in by 40in, at his home in Carlton House Terrace. Identified as "the property of a gentleman of title" in the catalogue at Sotheby's, they are expected to fetch between £40,000 and £60,000. The sale on 24 April offers collectors a foothold in the Old Master market and features work by 16th- and 17th-century artists, mostly priced between £6,000 and £20,000.
